Proverbs 1:11-15 (New Living Translation)

11 They may say, “Come and join us. Let’s hide and kill someone! Just for fun, let’s ambush the innocent!

12 Let’s swallow them alive, like the grave; let’s swallow them whole, like those who go down to the pit of death.

13 Think of the great things we’ll get! We’ll fill our houses with all the stuff we take.

14 Come, throw in your lot with us; we’ll all share the loot.”

15 My child, don’t go along with them! Stay far away from their paths.

Pastor’s Thoughts

What we are seeing in this text is the very definition of peer pressure. They say we are doing it and we want you to do it with us. They also say come on don’t you want to make a lot of money. In other words, “this is the big score.” Sin always costs us more than we signed up for. Satan, the people of the world, and your very own flesh will do just about anything to not let you think about the consequences of those sins, they instead will try to entice you with what you will get once you commit said decision.

Sin always promises more than it can deliver, and it always leaves you out to dry once you have gone “too far.”

Again, there will always be opportunities to sin, even without the heavy influence of people in your life attempting to get you to sin. As soon as the temptation is presented, walk away. You and I both know when we are being tempted. We know. We need to have pre-decided to just walk away.

Don’t be flattered that others want you to do “this” and “that” with them. They are just bating you to join them in their misery.

If you do not want to be an alcoholic then don’t spend all your time in bars and around people who show no restraint around alcohol. If you do not want to be a gossip then don’t spend a significant amount of your time with gossips. If you do not want to be adulterer then don’t fraternize with people who behave like adulterers.

The flip side is, if you do want to be a Godly spouse then spend time with other Godly spouses. If you do want to be a person with deep understanding of God’s Word then spend your time with people with a deep understanding of God’s Word.

The people that you choose to spend your time with will rub off on you. You get to choose whether that is a Godly or an ungodly rubbing off.

Have a blessed Wednesday everyone!
