Proverbs 1.8 (New Living Translation)
8 My child, listen when your father corrects you. Don’t neglect your mother’s instruction.
Pastor’s Thoughts
I used verse 8 again for a reason. Notice that the child has the responsibility to listen to their father’s correction and is told not to neglect (ignore) the mother’s instructions.
Not only are the father and mother held accountable for how they raise their children, but the child is also held accountable for what they do with the raising they receive.
Again, wise people are to be lifelong learners. Wise children are to be lifelong learners.
I love my children very much. And my wife and I strive very hard to make sure we raise them up in God’s Word. But they are responsible and accountable to God for what they do with said instruction.
We need to make sure we tell our children that the ball is in their court on what they will do with our raising of them. That they will answer to God for what they do with it.
Last night I was reading through the book of Exodus with the boys, and we were hearing all the many instructions that God was giving Moses for how He wanted His people to live. The things they should do and the things they must not do. I explained to them that part of being a child of God is trusting that God knows best even if we don’t understand why He says do this or don’t do this. I explained to them that the Israelites were such a mess and have maintained being such a mess all throughout history because they would constantly pick and choose what they would and would not do in obeying God.
They are accountable to God for what they do with God’s instructions. You are accountable for instructing others. You and everyone else is responsible for what they do with God’s instruction.
Are you going to be an obedient faithful child, trusting that your Heavenly Father knows better and has your best interest at heart or are you going to live a life of constant rebellion?
Have a blessed Sunday everyone! Please don’t neglect your Father’s instruction on the importance of gathering with a local church body this morning.
