Proverbs 1.8 (New Living Translation)

8 My child, listen when your father corrects you. Don’t neglect your mother’s instruction.

Pastor’s Thoughts

The author, King Solomon, is writing as a father to a child.

He expresses that those desiring to be wise listen to their father’s correction. When I see listen, what comes to my mind is hearing with the intent to do something with what is being heard.

Then he tells said child to not neglect (ignore) their mother’s instructions (teachings).

This verse tells me that a father or father figure needs to be correcting and leading their child in the right way to go. He should not allow said child to go the way they feel like going without there being consequences.

It also tells me that a mother needs to instruct their child as they raise them, not letting them figure life out on their own.

Throughout the Bible, parents have been given the privilege and responsibility to teach their children to know what God and His Word says, to teach them why He says it, and the importance of applying it to how they choose to live their lives. And most importantly, God has given us the opportunity to display our own faith in Jesus before our children so that they can make the decision for themselves one day in what they will do with God’s Word and Jesus Christ.

Some of you may still have children in your home. If so, raise them in a home that knows, understands, obeys, and shares God’s Word with others.

Some of you may no longer have children in the home. You have a responsibility of not guilting your grown children into salvation; but instead, to display the love of Christ in their lives every opportunity you get. I can’t tell you how many times I have seen a parent with the children out of the home surrender to Christ or get serious about their faith in Christ and because of the change that Christ brings to that parent’s life, it leads the child outside of the home to go on their own faith journey with God’s Word.

What if you have no children in your life. Well, the truth is what I am about to say applies to those with no children and those with children. Purposefully make yourself available to make disciples of someone around you. There are so many men and women that are younger than you no matter what age you are that need someone like you to take them under their wing and tell them the good news about Jesus. Walking through God’s Word with them and living life with them teaching them how to grow and mature in their own faith.

As Christians, we are to be lifelong learners AND lifelong teachers. Are you teaching and instructing someone into becoming a growing (maturing) disciple of Jesus Christ?

Have a blessed Saturday everyone! Make it top priority to worship Jesus Christ with a church family tomorrow. And while you are at it, invite (encourage) someone to go with you.
