Pastor’s Thoughts
There are two audiences in this verse that the writer mentions. The simple and the young.
I think a better word for “simple” that expresses the meaning of the authors original intent is “unaware.” The New American Standard Bible 1995 translation uses the word “naïve.”
There are many ways to be unaware. You could be unaware because you have never been told one way or the other. You could be unaware because you didn’t understand something when it was explained to you. You could be unaware because your brain processes differently than others. Some of the smartest people that I know are certainly full of knowledge and love taking in more knowledge, but they also are unaware of normal things that the everyday person would know.
I would have fit this category of unaware at times and I am betting you would have as well. So how do we become aware? We go to the book of Proverbs and apply its teachings to our lives everyday all throughout the day for the rest of our lives.
Now for the young. I have made many dumb and even dangerous decisions throughout my youth because I was unaware of what would happen or because I didn’t care what would happen or because I was pressured into doing so.
I think we can agree that the young people today in our country and our world would benefit from the book of Proverbs. This specific verse says that is would provide knowledge and discernment to the young. In other words, if the young and I dare say, you and I, will apply the book of Proverbs to our lives then we will think a lot more before acting. That when the temptation of sin is before us we will understand that there is a better way. Even though our flesh, people of the world, and Satan are telling us otherwise.
The book of Proverbs shows us that better way. The best way.
Do you use God’s Word to help you discern what you should and should not do in making everyday decisions? You should. Take it from me.
Have a blessed Wednesday everyone!
